How your due date is worked out

If you calculate from your last period, this tool uses Naegele's rule: it counts 280 days (40 weeks) forward from the first day of your last menstrual period. If your cycle is longer or shorter than 28 days, it adjusts for when you likely ovulated. Calculating from a known conception or IVF transfer date counts forward from fertilisation instead, which is often more precise.

Remember: a due date is an estimate, not a deadline. Only about 1 in 20 babies arrive on the exact date, and a full-term birth can happen any time between 37 and 42 weeks. Your early dating scan is the most accurate confirmation.

Common questions

How accurate is this due date?

It's a solid estimate based on standard obstetric dating, but your baby decides the actual day. Most babies arrive within two weeks either side of the estimate. An early ultrasound is the gold standard for confirming dates.

My cycle isn't 28 days, does that matter?

Yes, a little. Longer cycles usually mean later ovulation, which nudges the due date later. Set your average cycle length above and the calculator adjusts automatically.

What foods should I focus on now?
